Alvar Aalto won the design competition related to the 1937 Paris World Exhibition with his design based on a wavy shape. Over the decades, objects designed by Aalto have become classics of Nordic design. Inspired by Finland's thousands of lakes, Aalto's production combines sculptural form with functionality. Each Aalto vase is made individually in a multi-stage production process at the Iittala glass factory. The vase is mouth blown, cut from the glass mass by hand and sanded to its final shape.
